Turning the traditional music industry on its head.

Turning the traditional music industry on its head.

For the 11th digitalTRAFFIC album, the traditional boundaries between artist and listener are being dismantled. Rather than releasing a static recording, Edinburgh based digitalTRAFFIC is launching 'engineer' - an interactive generative app that functions as a "distributed laboratory."

'engineer' shifts the role of the musician from content creator to infrastructure architect. By providing fans with the "master keys" to the studio, the app allows the audience to manipulate real-time synthesis, density, and texture to co-create their own unique iterations of the digitalTRAFFIC sound.

In this model, the album is no longer a finished product, but a living workspace. This is a fundamental rethink of how music is consumed, distributed and funded in a digital-first world.

The lab is officially open. It’s time to stop just listening and start engineering.
Explore the project and the mission behind it (link coming soon).

'Whens an album not an album - when its an app'

When is an album not an album? When it’s an app!

Algorithmic Music App Turns Everyday Listeners into Electronic Music Producers
A new interactive ambient soundscape engine by electronic soundscape artist digitalTRAFFIC allows users to procedurally generate a custom 5-track LP right in their desktop web browser.

EDINBURGH, Scotland – The boundary between software and art has blurred with the launch of a new interactive web application from digitalTRAFFIC. Moving beyond static streaming formats, the producer has packaged his new procedural LP, engineer album, as a fully playable web-based audio context engine. The release invites the global public to step inside the mixing console and shape the sonic characteristics of the music themselves.

Algorithmic Audio Controls
The studio app functions as an automated generative workstation built upon six distinct, real-time audio layers. By interacting with a minimalist, brutalist control console, users manipulate multi-layered strands of drone, texture, pad, sound effects, noise, and melody. The software bypasses traditional pre-recorded playback, synthesising and mixing the electronic arrangement on the fly based entirely on user input.

Shaping Sonic Parameters
Five macro-parameter sliders sit at the core of the app’s code framework, giving listeners precise control over the mathematical boundaries of the music. Adjusting sliders for variables like density, texture depth, and movement introduces low-frequency oscillations that dynamically morph the soundscape's complexity. Users can also fine-tune parameters for darkness and dissonance to seamlessly transition the audio from comforting harmonies to heavy industrial distortion.

Adaptive Mood Toggles
To streamline the generative process, the web engine features five instantly deployable mood presets: ethereal, industrial, cosmic, organic, and digital. These structural profiles rearrange the underlying sound synthesis chains, altering frequency filtering filters to match a listener's desired environment. The software is engineered with an infinite playback loop mode, allowing the code to procedurally shift and evolve without ever repeating the same pattern.

Global Creator Toolkit
Once a user crafts a desirable five-track mix, the application's built-in file compilation system packages the unique configuration for instant export. Curated by Edinburgh-based artist donaldo tho, the digitalTRAFFIC project offers these custom files to the creative community as a royalty-free, open-source resource hub. Creative professionals and indie developers can visit the 'engineer album' web app to generate, remix, and download custom audio assets for their own multimedia projects.

Open-Access Creative Hub
Developed with support from opera.agency, the digitalTRAFFIC generator studio requires no account sign-ups or licensing fees. All user-compiled audio sets downloaded from the application are completely royalty-free and instantly cleared for commercial video content, independent gaming apps, and physical art installations. Multimedia artists can launch their first procedural scoring session by visiting the live deployment link (coming soon).

PLAY FULL ALBUM HERE or PLAY ON SPOTIFY
culture album from digitalTRAFFIC featuring five hyperambient electronica tracks exploring future creations and recordings of culture by AI.

Five hyperambient tracks - a coherent assault on the senses from the first track with heavy sound dissonance and rhythmic patterns reflecting the sounds of future digitised culture - many strange and wonderful electronic tones, vibes, peaks and troughs - a sonic texture for future generations.

monolith - an ethereal hyperambient soundscape creating an atmosphere of sonic anticipation.
enlightenment - a subtle shift of sonic pace and sound - unusual textured electronica soundscape with reversed ambient layers and FX sounds.
deeptime - hyperambient electronica layered textures electronica.
essence - hypnotic ambient electronica soundscene - layered soundscape over rich sonic textures
mindprint - hyperambient electronica soundscape - pondering atmospheric dark ambient soundscape.

The album artwork is an impression of our future self - raising questions of the definition of culture in the future of humankinds journey.

(no machines were harmed in the making of this album)
